SPRING SUMMER 2011 COLLECTION “COEUR JOIE” Uplifting colours and a vital elegance brighten this season at Nina Ricci. Avoiding the narrative, Peter Copping refers to the house’s archives. Namely the collaborations with Christian Bérard, Janine Janet and Marc Lalique : decorative artists known for their finesse and light - hearted charm. Still, such inspiration is freely interpreted. It acts as a spring board for a deft collection which combines fantasy, femininity and edge. The feminine silhouette is characteristic of Nina Ricci. The cut and form sum up a contemporary simplicity. Subtle nods to Bérard, Janet and Lalique run throughout. Intentional contradictions are omnipresent. Tailored pieces appear softened via signature Ricci details, an asymmetric playfulness or being cut in ultra light fabrics. A sportswear slant prevents the clothes from sliding into sweet and eases couture - like aspects. Fabrics evolve from the simple to the elaborate. An enlightened use of the basic includes parachute silk, cotton poplin and silk crêpe. Poetic embellishment suggests Janine Janet. Hemlines shimmer with sequins and transparent flowers are applied to prints. A sequined organza is hand painted and quilted. A broderie anglaise is trompe-l’oeil to resemble tweed and a Lalique vase - inspired print, computer enhanced to appear bleached by the sun. The palette with a “joie - de - vivre” is thoroughly Berard. Pale and blush colours are charged with bright accents of acidic yellow, cerise, shocking pink. Touches of navy blue, black and taupe persist. Copping’s collection bursts with energy and luminous appeal. Anchored by the spirit of Nina Ricci, he revisits signature codes and delivers sensual, desirable clothes with a contemporary twist. He proves that modern Parisian allure can have a feel good factor.
