WORLD FOOD 1492 EUROPEAN EXPLORERS ATLANTIC MAIZ POTATOES PLANTS CHOCOLATE
FOOD FROM THE NEW WORLD
From 1492 onwards, European explorers sailed across
the Atlantic to what they called the New
World of North, Central and South America. There they
have discovered a treasure trove of gold and
silver. But they found other treasures, too. These
were foods that grew only in the New World, such
as sweetcorn (sometimes called maize) and potatoes,
and plants that could be made into medicines.
In fact, you may be surprised to find out how many of
the foods you eat come from the New World.
Every time you eat a tomato or some mashed potato or
have chocolate for a treat, just think, you
owe them to the people of Americas.
