The Declaration of Independence
Celebrated on July 4th every year, Independence Day is a national holiday in America and commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Prior to 1776, America consisted of 13 colonies
with allegiance to the English crown. These colonies were unhappy at having to pay taxes to England without any representation in the English parliament, thus they decided to form the Continental Congress, where on 4th July 1776, they drafted a formal declaration of independence.
The first celebrations took place the next year and by the early 1800 the traditions of picnics, parades and fireworks had become commonplace.
